Yep, the music industry was dying because of piracy (apparently). Then the iPod and iTunes store come along and change everything. Those who don't adapt, die. In most retail areas, bricks and mortar resisted the digital space rather than embracing it, and someone else (amazon, ebay, iTunes) came in and stole their business. Piracy doesn't kill an industry, it shows the industry where the next marketplace is.
