If more atheists were more like this guy, I could be getting along with more atheists. I thought he was very well spoken and that he does indeed have the right to not believe in God.
Many poured their hate at him for being "too harsh" on the awards, but what's the problem with those spoiled stars suffering a few uncomfortable moments while they're enjoying their posh lives during the rest of the year? I think they can handle some unpleasant truths being told right into their face - by a funny man, in a funny way. Self-criticism is the first thing any self-respecting public figure should learn before ever thinking of claiming to have any semblance of a sense of humor. :-)
Of course people have the right not to believe in a god, and it's very sweet of believers to "tolerate" an atheist like Gervais. Next perhaps they'll stop attacking people of different faiths from their pulpits, or damning relentlessly all the people they consider "sinners", like gays, with lies on top of lies. Naw that's too much to ask. When an atheist (or an agnostic like me) criticizes believers, it's somehow considered unacceptable. It's simply freedom of speech. Even harsh criticism and vicious jokes are ok. Criticism (and satire) is NOT persecution and believers ought to concentrate more on living up to what they preach than worrying about atheists who make fun of them.
Like many (borderline) atheists, I thoroughly enjoy having a bully pulpit (and my reply wasn't directed to good ole non-believers like you and Kol anyway, God bless you ;-)
maybe, for Americans, it's that British accent which makes everything seem so much more serious, and even a bit pretentious at times. ????? just saying...it's not like his lingo is Cockney you know :S
You see, I'm good to people because I want to be treated that way.
Sounds overly optimistic. The vast majority of humans beings are shit and will stab someone in the back for minimal to no gain if the opourtunity presents itself. This is no matter how nicely they've been treated by the soon to be stabbed.
Not exactly. But I've laid my traps for such people. Nothing is funnier than to turn around, grab the kinfe you knew as coming, and face rape a would-be backstabber.
Neither would I. That makes two people. :-)
Then you guard my back while I guard yours. It's a scary world out there full of bad people. ;)
He sounds like a really nice and reasonable person. I wish more people of both religous and non-religous kind were like him and refrained from poking fun at the other side, since that kind of behavior really vitiates the environment for any dialog that might take place.

Well OK but for the record there are some differences between me and Kol. He's agnostic. I'm atheist.
