Freedom Day

April 27 will always be a milestone in the country’s history.

Twenty years ago, the majority of previously oppressed South Africans exercised their democratic right to vote.

The day marked the end of a painful past and a struggle that claimed many lives, but it also marked the beginning of a new era, a new South Africa.

Today we commemorate Freedom Day - the day South Africans were liberated from oppression, segregation and a white minority domination.

But along with the celebrations, it's a time to reflect on what's been achieved over the past two decades as the country prepares to go to the polls again in less than two weeks' time.

I am constantly grateful to you and some other LJ friends here, who have given me some small insights in South African life, in a way that I wouldn't have had otherwise.

I remember waking up to the news. It was a very happy day.

... And yet I still encounter people who claim that "things are just as bad". I try not to rip their head off when they say that.

Cheers to all South Africans! A well-deserved holiday.
