I'm not familiar with his situation — specifically, why he was home schooled.

Roughly half of the cases of home schooling are for non-academic reasons. 33 percent cite religion + 9 percent "morality", plus it's reasonable to assume some part of the 14 percent that "objected to what the school teaches" really belong in those groups since what they're likely objecting to is evolution.
