Bad, bad Tiger

The hypocritical pseudo-Puritan US society condemns the adultery of one of its idols, while indulging into fornication and moral vileness of all sorts?

That's entertaining.

[identity profile] underlankers.livejournal.com 2010-01-01 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Hypocrisy is the oldest evil.

[identity profile] inibo.livejournal.com 2010-01-01 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, what would you expect from a society where this provoked an explosion of moral outrage...

While this...

...not so much

Its the reluctance to try to look into deeper issues, as this requires some mental effort. Its way easier to stick to pretending to care about superficial things like a singer's tits.

[identity profile] kardashev.livejournal.com 2010-01-01 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I hardly pay attention to celebrity sex scandals myself. Tiger Woods' job is to play a sport I don't give a damn about. I don't ask him to be a paragon of virue.

It's really nobody's business but his and his family's in my opinion.

[identity profile] underlankers.livejournal.com 2010-01-01 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

[identity profile] mahnmut.livejournal.com 2010-01-01 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
So you're a better man than the average ;-)

[identity profile] kardashev.livejournal.com 2010-01-01 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno if I'm better. Trust me, I have flaws like everybody else. But seriously, I don't get this voyeuristic fascination with Tiger's downward spiral. I might actually care if I knew him personally but I don't.

Mountains out of molehills.

Bread & circus...

[identity profile] geezer-also.livejournal.com 2010-01-01 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
So, is it only with Americans that his popularity went down? He was supposed to the most popular/most recognizable athlete in the world. I'm a bit curious how the rest of the world is reacting.

[identity profile] mahnmut.livejournal.com 2010-01-01 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think the rest of the world has ever cared about this particular sportist. Being famous is not exactly like being popular.

The most popular US athlete beyond the US borders is by far Michael Jordan.

[identity profile] hannahsarah.livejournal.com 2010-01-01 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Average Americans don't care that he lied and cheated, they're mad because he got caught. Getting away with things is "admirable" (that rascal!), but being stupid is not.

It was the same thing with Bill Clinton. Privately, people were like "Woo hoo, yeah! If I were him I'd be gettin' some too!" but in public they thought it was a disgrace to the Oval Office. The implication was that if he was in a hotel in Vegas, and no one found out until he published his memoires years later, then everything would have been just fine.

[identity profile] mahnmut.livejournal.com 2010-01-01 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't grip my mind around this - how could someone who earns millions from commercial contracts, risk all that with writing a stupid memoir? A sudden call of conscience, or a temporary idiocy?

[identity profile] mahnmut.livejournal.com 2010-01-01 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Grip->wrap, whatever.

[identity profile] hannahsarah.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
The memoire comes after the millions are safely in the bank. It's called "bragging", and some find the call irresistable. For others, they find out that someone ELSE is about to do an "unauthorised biography" so they figure they'd better spill the beans first.

*shrug* I'm still baffled at men who seem physically incapable of keeping certain body parts in their pants.

[identity profile] mahnmut.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'm more baffled by their inability to keep their tongue behind their teeth about certain things.

You reap what you sow. Let him eat his own shit now.

I'm going to bet that you're getting the nuance. I am so going to bet.

[identity profile] underlankers.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
A state with Jacob Zuma, an admitted rapist whose definition of hygiene with regards to HIV-positive people involves showers and magical thinking is not in a great position to criticize the USA. Barack Obama and George Bush have been markedly well-behaved in comparison to other politicians our nation's had in the Oval Office.

[identity profile] mahnmut.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
And what does this have to do with the 'state' of Jacob Zuma, and how did the 'state' criticize the USA? Am I the 'state'?

[identity profile] underlankers.livejournal.com 2010-01-03 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm saying if you guys couldn't find someone better than Zuma to run you guys where we did give the GOP the boot....

[identity profile] mahnmut.livejournal.com 2010-01-03 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
You won't make me defend Zuma right now, but on the other hand you're tempting me to use Panookah's phrase "you're not familiar with..." ...and blablablah :-)

[identity profile] mahnmut.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Oh I get it. South Africa's president is a moron, therefore the remaining 49 million South Africans are supposed to shut the hell up and never talk about rape, hygiene, and fornication. Great logic, thanks. Took me a while.

Well, by the logic applied to the USA under the Bush Administration.....

I never told any American to shut the hell up about anything.

I'm so very tired of the Tiger bs. He's a sports star. He does sports. Why do people care that his personal life is all debaucherous? I mean so so many sports stars are, why all of a sudden is it a big deal? I'm dumbfounded.

[identity profile] mahnmut.livejournal.com 2010-01-01 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Bread & circus, brother.

And...

[identity profile] alphistia.livejournal.com 2010-01-02 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Remarkably, a story about Tiger Woods many infidelities gets traction for weeks, but a story like this (see wire story lead below) ultimately gets a shrug of the shoulders response from most US media and the American public. Blackwater thugs continue to be paid by the American taxpayer, even under Obama! This kind of thing happens so often it's not even a shock anymore:

Expecting justice, Iraqis get bitter shock as judge throws out Blackwater shooting case
By Rebecca Santana (CP) – 8 hours ago
BAGHDAD — Iraqis seeking justice for 17 people shot dead at a Baghdad intersection responded with bitterness and outrage Friday at a U.S. judge's decision to throw out a case against a Blackwater security team accused in the killings.
The Iraqi government vowed to pursue the case, which became a source of contention between the U.S. and the Iraqi government. Many Iraqis also held up the judge's decision as proof of what they'd long believed: U.S. security contractors were above the law

Well I was accused by an over-zealous Ameripatriot that 'I don't know shit about the American mindset' for bringing this up. I guess I should just shut up and talk about Avatar.

And now you finally know your place, Africa-based, European man.

It's really best to leave America to the Americans. We are doing such a bang up job of running our country, the global economy, Iran's nuclear disarmament program, policing the world, stopping climate change, spreading democracy and entertainment throughout the land! And don't forget, the U.S has the moral imperative to rid the world of terrorists (aka people that are not Christian or who want to stop corporate greed). And we excel at hand washing, germ phobia, moralizing, hypocracy, SHOPPING! and criticism of other people.

But do talk about Avatar because it provides the solutions to all the world's problems. God bless James Cameron and his Smurfy Fighters for Good.

And hey, sorry about Africa, man. If only it were a U.S. State. You wouldn't have to worry about corruption and/or stupidly of your elected officials–it would be guaranteed!

Sheesh, that was way better than the snarkiest comment I'd ever be able to make! Well done :-)

Unfortunately I know far too much about the American mindset, and its fundamental core value is: hypocrisy...

The plummeting popularity of Tiger Woods post-scandal is simply a market correction on the popularity of Golf and Golfers in general... There was no real reason for it to have gotten so high to begin with.
