After reading an entry by [personal profile] abomvubuso, I was impressed by the story of Kleifar Vatn, the dying lake. It is in south-western Iceland and seems to disappear quickly under the land surface through some crack in the ground. It is thrilling to imagine that a lake which is so important to many people in the area who connect it to their memories, settlements and way of life, will appear lake-less one sunny day.

Icelanders are accustomed to their land being stretched, split, and torn by violent earthquakes and haphazardly rebuilt by exploding volcanoes. But everyone was surprised when a large lake began to disappear into a long fissure created by one of last summer's earthquakes.

The draining lake is an oddity even by Icelandic standards, and has lured hordes of curious onlookers to it barren shores.

A few small corrections.

The name of the lake is Kleifarvatn.

Hardly 500 ppl live in the vicinity of the lake (not even one permanent settlement within 10 miles), but yes, there are many more who hold dear memories about it.

It wont disappear in one day, and besides a "sunny day" is smth you'll rarely see in Iceland :D

These aside, your totally right about KV :}}}
