Best way to shut off a troll: make them feel uncomfortable. Best way to make a troll feel uncomfortable: talk to them with reason and respect. Catches them off their tracks.

Get down to their level and they win.

that's never worked for me. Best way to shut off a troll is to cut them off at the knees, both philosophically and blocking their access.
