The Hell of it is that there was a lot of truth to this. The Muslim dynastic states of the 10th and 11th Centuries were far more "civilized" than post-Carolingian Europe. The differences between the two included that the Muslims were able to hold on to much of modern-day Spain and almost the entirety of the Balkans for multiple centuries, while none of the Crusader states lasted very long.
And at the time Western European medical knowledge was also much less sophisticated than that seen in the Muslim states of the time. They understood germ theory, which the West did not grasp until the 1800s.
