After reading an entry by [personal profile] abomvubuso, I was impressed by the story of Kleifar Vatn, the dying lake. It is in south-western Iceland and seems to disappear quickly under the land surface through some crack in the ground. It is thrilling to imagine that a lake which is so important to many people in the area who connect it to their memories, settlements and way of life, will appear lake-less one sunny day.

Icelanders are accustomed to their land being stretched, split, and torn by violent earthquakes and haphazardly rebuilt by exploding volcanoes. But everyone was surprised when a large lake began to disappear into a long fissure created by one of last summer's earthquakes.

The draining lake is an oddity even by Icelandic standards, and has lured hordes of curious onlookers to it barren shores.
