City to oppose bid to halt stadium construction

The City of Cape Town says it will oppose a Cape High Court bid to try and stop the construction of the 2010 Green Point Stadium.

This comes after the Cape Town Environmental Protection Association, a lobby group, filed an urgent High Court application today to challenge the stadium project. The association argues that the city and provincial government failed to follow due process in some of their decisions to approve the project.

Pieter Cronje, the city's 2010 spokesperson, says all of these processes were followed very meticulously as there was public participation followed by an appeals period, so they believe they have followed proper process.

Geoffrey Carter, the attorney for the association, says the City of Cape Town had already undertaken not to proceed with irreversible building work pending the outcome of the case. Carter says their bid is to do with due process, as very clearly alluded to in all their papers and application of well over 700 pages.
