It certainly is remarkable how journalists and NGOs get kidnapped on what is now a fairly regular basis and turning up riddled with bullet holes. Meanwhile Medvedev and Putin look up to the sky and whistle. Democracy starts with a free, frank and fair press. Hit squads are just so 1930's KGB!

There is a really significant neo-Nazi and radical nationalist element of the general population in Russia. Non-Slavic people and especially Muslims get kidnapped and shot all the time and I imagine they really hate the especially outspoken and popular ones.
I don't think the government is behind the assassinations, but I do think they secretly sorta like that it's happening.
