Same old same old?
May. 4th, 2011 08:57 pmI just saw a bunch of guys in my, let's call it "constituency", being fired because the UKnian/USnian investing consortium who used to operate their nickel (was it nickel?) mine in the Midrand suddenly decided it was no longer "beneficial" to keep a business around - and that, after having sprinkled the neighborhood with booklets describing a brave bright future for the community, full of joy and white semi-detached houses with little lawns in front of them. There were those other booklets who also described how much those guys cared about the "development of the democratic process in your community", which was so pinky-rosy it made me shed a tear. However the locals soon learned the hard way that there's a bit of a difference between what those booklets were talking about and what those guys were actually intending to do (just like it happened with Bush preaching one thing, namely Freedom(TM), while doing another, namely unFreedom). When a number of locals asked how come their wages are a tiny fraction of what their counterparts elsewhere in the industry are getting, the Big Daddies suddenly changed the tone and told them to STFU, Or Else. When many of them didn't STFU, the Daddies did an "economic assessment of the situation", and "reconsidered their business options" and decided that the "business climate in the province" was not "favorable enough" and moved elsewhere. India I think.
By the way some of those booklets still remain. The locals use them as toilet paper. I even saw one which praised the local representative in our parliament, a guy known for his shadowy past and lavish lifestyle, while he used to preach to his constituents how much he's "a guy from the people, just like you, my dear".
