If this is how the World Cup is going to proceed, I may as well revert to watching rugby union tests now.

I think that's a legitimate fall, look at his foot. Not saying he then doesn't play on it.

Yes, he fell. But not because he was tripped or pushed. ;-)

That's a different thing to diving. I didn't see the incident, but in the gif its hard to see if he's appealing.

OK, here's the whole situation from a different angle.

The ref had a perfect view. It's not like he was 50 yards away. And yet he either got himself tricked or was too eager to reward the Brazilians at a moment when things were looking very tough for them.

It IS a dive and there shouldn't have been a penalty. Even the Brazilians admitted it after the game. The game won't be cleansed of allegations of corruption until referees stop giving decisive gifts to favored teams.

I'm not really sure it's a dive, he puts his hands out, but it's not like he grabs his face or anything. I think it's just a really poor refereeing decision.

You know what annoys me even more than the dives? (which I've accepted as part of the game) How the players grab the ball after a free kick is awarded and throw it further back. After the whistle blows only the ref or the team who won the free should be touching the ball. I find it disrespectful of the position of referee.

Oh, so he has to grab his face so it could be interpreted as a dive? Boy, the diving standards have gotten way too high lately!

If it isn't a dive, then why would you think it's a poor refereeing decision? If it's not a dive, then it's a genuine foul, but since it's a poor refereeing decision, it can't be that, right?

Cheating parts of the game can be rooted out, as past examples have suggested. There's a history of changing the rules to counter various cheating methods, like returning the ball to the goal-keeper's hands. And btw, the punishments for diving have become very severe these days - all they need is a more strict and even-handed enforcement.

As for the free-kick, you may've noticed this new rule, the referees now use a vanishing spray to indicate exactly where the ball should be placed during free-kicks, and then paint a line which the defending "wall" of players shouldn't cross, lest they want the yellow cards to start flowing.

A dive is throwing yourself to the ground, I don't think there's anything he could have done to stay on his feet, look at his ankle, you don't twist an ankle like that and not go down. He fell over, it should be no foul, so it's a poor referring decision. You can fall over and it not be a dive or a foul, this is one.

These are dives, note the difference:

A dive is a dive, a fall is a fall. Sure, you can overact on a fall, but I think all sports do that (ruggers included). The uniquely soccer tactic is to grab your face and fall to the ground after someone has touched your arm.

I've seen the spray that's a good one.

In football, a "dive" is a colloquial term being used for cheating into being awarded a foul (generally when one loses balance and falls to the ground, pretending to be pushed/tripped). Fell over or whatever, Fred cheated.
