A: China has protected Sudan from international anger over the killings of hundreds of thousands of people by government-backed janjaweed militias in Darfur. In 2004, it prevented sanctions being imposed by the UN Security Council by threatening a veto. In addition, it buys most of Sudan's oil, having used a state-run oil firm to invest heaviliy in the industry, and sells arms to the government.
