Well I don't know much about the diversity model so I can't speak for it. While there's plenty of diversity in America it's often stressed to be American first. This aids in assimilating foreigners better, as they strive to blend in. While diversity sounds good on paper, at times it can strike me as being a code word for "stay in your place".
I'm of Mexican descent and yet I speak very American English and I'm an advent fan (and at times just as advent a detractor) of American culture. I also have my Mexican culture which I value very much and enjoy with my family and fellow Mexicans, but outside of that I'm an American first. Who says you can't have both?
Sometimes it can bother my more ethnic counterparts who think I'm trying to be "white". Sometimes it bothers whites who can't seem to relax until I tell them what my heritage is (as if that pegs me into some sort of category for them). I tend to ignore both, as I'm not going to let anyone tell me how I'm "supposed" to act.
I'm an American because I want to be, and because I love my country despite its faults.
