World Cup in 3D?
May. 3rd, 2010 03:07 pmSo the World Cup matches will be broadcast in 3D. I can't imagine why sports fans would want to watch football games in fancy 3D, but Sky Perfect JSAT and Sony corporations think there's a market for it. A number of matches will be broadcast in 3D, including the Japan v Holland match and the final, through the multi-channel pay TV service. Sony is collaborating with FIFA on the filming and production of images for these 3D broadcasts and will employ its 3D technology.
So really, why is Sony jumping onboard? The 3D World Cup broadcasts coincide with the launch of the first batch of BRAVIA LCD TVs in June. The World Cup telecasts are expected to draw an audience of 26 billion, and Sony is clearly hoping that the 25 3D broadcasts and World Cup fever might be enough to drive fans to their electronics stores to purchase a 3D-adapted TV.
3D supposedly makes you feel as if you were in the stadium itself, but count me among the skeptics. Maybe if some clown onscreen spills beer on me it'll make me a believer.
