The last thing we would have needed was an old fart like Bombadil leading to a gratuitous nude scene featuring the Hobbits while none of the women get one). The changes actually made them a more straightforward story instead of one that very obviously bloated in the telling. I presume the Hobbit, if it integrates a great deal of the backstory, OTOH, might be different. And so what? Radagast with the magical bunny sleigh is epic win.
