War on "terror", or...?
Apr. 27th, 2007 06:37 pmPutin Meets Czech Leader, Compares US Missile Defense to Pershings
Russian President Vladimir Putin said after a meeting with Czech President Vaclav Klaus today that the US plan to build an anti-missile base in Europe is a threat similar to US Pershing missiles, the CeskeNoviny daily reported on its web-site.
Putin slams US plans for anti-missile system
Russia's military decision worries NATO
"“We cannot remain unconcerned by what has been going on in Europe in terms of armament. We are doing our utmost to fulfil our commitments. No heavy weapons have been left in the European part of Russia. NATO, however, wants to place two new bases in Bulgaria and Romania, and two parts of the missile defence system in Poland and the Czech Republic. Russia has been disarming itself while its partners fill the space with new kinds of weapons,” Putin said."
When looking on the map, the first thought that comes to mind is: how is the planned anti-missile system supposed to defend Europe from possible missile attacks from the Middle East, if its main bases are not situated in any area near the Middle East, but in an area which is rather close to Russia? Question is, against whom are these anti-missile systems directed really? No, don't answer me. That was a rhetoric question.

...I thought that if someone really wanted to protect Europe from attacks from the Middle East, they would have put the anti-missile systems in Greece, Turkey, Macedonia, Albania and Italy?
