Whenever I hear the name melvin_udall I yawn, it's one of the purest internet impulses I have, along with the same reaction to steve_potocin.

I once was able to get along with Melvin for about a year.

It took me essentially refraining from entering any discussion where I would be in direct contradiction of his position, staying away from any flame attacks and going out of my way to affirm conservative points wherever I could.

It was actual hard work and somehow he took to being friendly to me -- after the election when he went even deeper into the deep end and statrted chiding me in conversations that didn't have anything to do with him, I explained how it was that we were being friendly -- and he got REALLY mad.

I can't seem to find it -- but it was interesting. Basically, I explained to him the efforts I went to to not get into any arguments with him and he took that as proof that I had spent a year "trolling" the board by....going out of my way to not troll.

It really was exhausting work -- any time I posted to conservatism, part of the thought process was "will this likely encourage melvin to attack me?" Melvin, of course, went off on how he had PLENTY of liberal friends on his journal page and none of them had to do any of that. I'll note it looks like a lot of them have given up since then too.
